5 Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Shoes

Published On: September 29, 2026

Your shoes don’t have to be falling apart to be past their prime. In fact, some of the most important signs that it’s time for a new pair are changes you can feel rather than see.

Knowing when to replace shoes can help you stay comfortable, protect your feet and avoid problems caused by footwear that has lost its support.

Here are five signs your shoes may be ready for retirement.

1. The soles are worn unevenly

Turn your shoes over and take a look at the soles. Is the tread significantly more worn in one area? Uneven wear can change the way your foot meets the ground and may affect how you walk.

If one shoe is noticeably more worn than the other, that’s worth paying attention to as well.

2. Your shoes no longer feel as comfortable

Remember how supportive your shoes felt when they were new? If they now feel flat, hard or less cushioned, the materials inside the shoe may have broken down.

You may notice that your feet feel more tired after a day of walking or standing, even though you haven’t changed your routine.

3. The shoe has lost its shape

A good shoe should maintain its basic structure. Look for a collapsed heel counter, stretched-out sides, creasing that has significantly changed the shape of the shoe or a sole that no longer sits evenly on the ground.

A shoe that has lost its structure may no longer provide the support it once did.

4. You’re experiencing new aches or discomfort

Sometimes your feet are the first to tell you that your footwear needs attention. New or increasing discomfort in your feet, heels or arches can be a reason to take a closer look at your shoes.

Don’t automatically blame your footwear, though. Persistent or unexplained pain deserves professional assessment.

5. Your shoes have simply had a lot of use

There is no magic expiration date for every pair of shoes. How long they last depends on the shoe itself, how often you wear it, your activities and your individual walking pattern.

However, if you’ve been wearing the same everyday shoes for years, it’s worth giving them an honest inspection, even if they still look fine from the outside.

When Should You Replace Your Shoes?

Knowing when to replace shoes is less about counting the months and more about paying attention to their condition and how your feet feel.

Take a few minutes to inspect your everyday footwear. If the soles are worn, the cushioning has flattened, the structure has changed, or your feet are becoming uncomfortable, it may be time for a new pair.

And if you’re experiencing ongoing foot pain, a chiropodist can help determine whether your footwear, foot mechanics or another issue may be contributing.
