Back-to-School Shoe Shopping Tips
(chiropodist approved ✅)
When it comes to back-to-school shoes, choosing the right pair can make a big difference in your child's foot health. Chiropodists often see foot pain, ingrown toenails, and flat feet caused or worsened by improper footwear.
Here's what to look for when shopping this season:
✅ 1. Fit Comes First
Shoes that are too small can cause blisters and damage to the feet, including the nails. Too large, and the foot will slide, causing instability. Aim for about a thumb's width of space between the longest toe and the end of the shoe.
✅ 2. Support Matters
Choose shoes with a firm heel counter, a flexible toe box, and a cushioned sole. Good arch support helps prevent fatigue and future issues, such as flat feet.
✅ 3. Laces or Velcro Over Slip-Ons
Shoes should stay secure throughout the day. Avoid slip-ons unless they have a snug fit and structured support.
✅ 4. Check the Wear Pattern
Bring your child's old shoes with you to your chiropodist appointment. Uneven wear may indicate biomechanical issues that can be addressed through a biomechanical assessment and the use of custom orthotics.
✅ 5. Let Them Walk Around
Always have your child try both shoes and walk in them on a hard surface. Break-in time shouldn't be painful.
👣 If your child experiences persistent foot pain or gait issues, a visit to your chiropodist can help. At Werkman Boven, we assess growing feet and recommend solutions, whether that's orthotics or simply better footwear.
