Foot Care During Pregnancy

Published On: April 8, 2025

Pregnancy is an exciting journey, but it comes with many physical changes—especially for your feet! As your baby grows, so does the strain on your lower body, leading to common foot concerns such as swelling, arch pain, and even changes in foot size.

At Werkman, Boven & Associates, we understand these challenges firsthand. Our own chiropodists, Stephen Witiuk (who became a first-time dad in March) and Kaitlin Boven (who is expecting her third child in June), know the importance of proper foot care during pregnancy.

How Pregnancy Affects Foot Health

  1. Swelling (Edema) – Increased blood volume and fluid retention can cause feet and ankles to swell, leading to discomfort.
  2. Flat Feet & Arch Pain – Relaxin, a pregnancy hormone, loosens ligaments, potentially causing fallen arches and heel pain.
  3. Increased Foot Size – Many women notice their feet grow due to swelling and ligament laxity, sometimes permanently.
  4. Leg Cramps & Varicose Veins – Poor circulation and added pressure on veins may result in cramps and visible veins.

Foot Care Tips for Expectant Mothers

  • Elevate & Move – Keep feet elevated when resting and take short walks to promote circulation. For information on exercising while pregnant, check out this page from The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

  • Wear Supportive Shoes – Opt for cushioned, supportive footwear with good arch support. Avoid tight shoes or high heels.

  • Compression Socks – These can help reduce swelling and improve circulation.

  • Stretch & Massage – Gentle foot stretches and massages relieve tension and improve mobility.

  • Stay Hydrated – Drinking plenty of water reduces fluid retention and cramping.

If foot pain or swelling becomes a concern, a chiropodist can help. Book an appointment with our team at Werkman, Boven & Associates for expert foot care tailored to your pregnancy needs. Your feet will thank you!
