Fall Tips for Hikers and Walkers

šŸ Autumn is a beautiful time to hit the trails. But cooler temperatures and uneven terrain can be tough on your feet if you’re not prepared. Whether you’re heading out for a weekend hike or a daily walk through Oakville’s trails, proper fall foot care is key to staying active and pain-free.

Wool or moisture-wicking socks are essential in fall weather. Avoid cotton, which can hold moisture and increase the risk of blisters. Layering a thin liner sock under a cushioned hiking sock can reduce friction and keep your feet warm.

Your summer sneakers may not cut it on fall trails. Look for hiking or walking shoes with good ankle support, weather resistance, and strong traction. Make sure they’re broken in before long walks.

Apply blister prevention tape to high-friction areas, such as your heels and toes. Keep your feet dry and take breaks to air them out on longer hikes.

Cool weather can stiffen your joints. Take time to stretch your calves, arches, and ankles before and after walking to prevent plantar fasciitis or Achilles tendon pain.

Pay attention to changes in your gait, foot fatigue, or any aches that persist after activity. Early fall is a great time to reassess your orthotics or visit your chiropodist before winter sets in.

At Werkman Boven, we help walkers and hikers stay comfortable on every path, whether it’s the Bruce Trail or your neighbourhood sidewalk.
