Is It a Corn, Wart, or Callus?
Not every sore spot on your foot is “just a callus.” Many people try to ignore foot discomfort until it starts interfering with daily life. The truth is that several common foot conditions can look similar at first but require different care.
Understanding what you are dealing with is the first step toward relief.
Corns
Corns are thickened areas of skin that develop due to pressure or friction. They often appear on the tops of toes or between them. Tight footwear, toe deformities, and repetitive rubbing are common causes.
Corns can become painful, especially when pressed. Trimming or medicated pads from the drugstore may offer short-term relief, but improper treatment can irritate healthy skin. Your chiropodist can safely reduce the corn and address the underlying pressure causing it.
Calluses
Calluses are another of the most common foot conditions we see. They are thicker, broader areas of hardened skin, usually on the soles of the feet. Unlike corns, they are rarely painful at first.
Over time, calluses can crack, dry out, and become uncomfortable. Regular professional care and proper footwear can prevent them from worsening.
Plantar Warts
Plantar warts are caused by a virus and often appear on the bottom of the foot. They may look like a callus, but they typically have tiny black dots and can hurt when squeezed from the sides.
Warts do not go away on their own. Professional treatment options are available and are often more effective than over-the-counter solutions.
Fungal Nails and Athlete’s Foot
Discoloured, thickened nails or peeling, itchy skin between the toes are also common foot conditions. Fungal infections can spread if left untreated. Early care can prevent further damage and reduce the risk of recurrence.
