Understanding Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT)

Published On: July 29, 2024

Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) offers a non-invasive solution for patients with chronic foot and ankle conditions. ESWT uses high-energy shockwaves to stimulate healing in damaged tissues, relieving pain and promoting long-term recovery.

One of the primary uses of ESWT in chiropody is treating plantar fasciitis, a common condition that causes heel pain. Plantar fasciitis occurs when the thick band of tissue running across the bottom of the foot becomes inflamed. Traditional treatments include rest, ice, and physical therapy, but these methods can produce results slowly. ESWT, on the other hand, accelerates the healing process by increasing blood flow to the affected area, reducing inflammation, and breaking down scar tissue.

Another condition effectively treated with ESWT is Achilles tendinopathy. This painful disorder affects the Achilles tendon, the band of tissue connecting the calf muscles to the heel bone. ESWT promotes the regeneration of tendon fibres and enhances collagen production, which is crucial for tendon repair. This therapy has proven particularly beneficial for patients who have not responded well to other treatments, such as corticosteroid injections or physical therapy.

During the treatment, an ultrasound gel is applied to the skin, and a handheld device delivers the shockwaves to the targeted area. Patients may experience some discomfort during the procedure, but this is usually well-tolerated. After the treatment, there may be some redness, swelling, or petechiae (pinpoint bruising), but these side effects are generally mild and temporary.

ESWT has shown impressive success rates in clinical studies, making it a preferred option for many chiropodists. It offers a faster recovery time than surgical alternatives and eliminates the risks associated with invasive procedures. For patients seeking effective, non-surgical relief from chronic foot and ankle pain, ESWT provides a promising solution that can significantly improve quality of life.
