What’s In An Appointment?

Have you ever wondered what happens at an appointment with Werkman, Boven & Associates? Let’s break it down.

Scheduling an Appointment

Scheduling an Appointment

When you contact us by phone or email, a patient representative will schedule an appointment with your chiropodist. If you are a new patient or haven’t seen your chiropodist in a while, we will send you an online form to securely collect your contact and medical information. As your appointment approaches, we will remind you of it by phone, text, or email at least a business day before.

Before Your Appointment

Before Your Appointment

Our patient representatives review the next day’s appointments to ensure the appropriate forms are completed and also consider any additional information we may need to collect at your appointment. They will also ensure you are contacted by phone, text, or email to remind you of the upcoming appointment.

Your chiropodist will review your information before your appointment. They will determine if any outstanding treatments may be required or discussed, if any medical concerns need to be noted or discussed, and ensure the appropriate amount of time has been allotted for any concerns you may have.

At Your Appointment

At Your Appointment

When you arrive for your appointment, visit one of our patient representatives at the front desk so they can check you in and notify the appropriate staff of your arrival.

A clinical assistant will usher you to a treatment room and prepare you for your chiropodist. This may include updating your contact or medical information and taking digital photos of your feet to monitor changes, moles and freckles, and skin and nail condition. The assistant will help remove your socks and shoes, help you into the treatment chair, and adjust it to your comfort.

Your chiropodist will then come in to assess and treat you. This includes a general foot health exam, monitoring of lesions, examining nail and skin conditions, and biomechanical and range of motion assessments. If you have come to us with a specific concern, this will also be assessed, treatment options discussed, and, if time allows, treatment provided the same day. Once the appointment is complete, if you require assistance, your chiropodist will be happy to put your socks and shoes back on and help you get to the front desk, where you will meet up with a patient representative again.

Your patient representative will schedule any required follow-up appointments, provide additional information, and take payment as per your chiropodist’s instruction.

After Your Appointment

After Your Appointment

After you leave the clinic, your chiropodist will carefully record everything that transpired during your appointment, from the findings to the treatments discussed and any required follow-up.

An assistant will meticulously clean the room you were treated in by disinfecting all the surfaces, sweeping the floor, and collecting the dirty instruments. The assistants sterilize all the instruments in our clinic using an autoclave. Our sterilization practices are to the same standards as a dental office to ensure the best cleanliness for you.

The patient representative will review your chart to ensure you have received all the appropriate information and that your next appointment is scheduled correctly, as needed. They will also review any forms to ensure all the information in your chart is correct.

We value open communication with your health team, including your family physician and specialists. Following your first visit with us or at your chiropodist’s request, we will send a letter to your family physician summarizing your chiropodist’s findings and treatment. This letter can include requests for your doctor to assess a specific finding and possibly refer you to a specialist if necessary.

A big part of our practice is providing regular foot care for those with diabetes. Annually, your chiropodist will do an Inlow’s Diabetic Assessment. This assessment includes sensory testing, temperature checks, nail and skin evaluation, and checking your circulation. We provide your doctor and endocrinologist with a summary of this exam.

As you can see, so many things go into your appointment: before, during, and after. On average, we see more than seventy patients every day! Our staff keeps very busy with repeating this process for each appointment. We appreciate every patient who comes into our clinic and are grateful that Werkman, Boven & Associates Foot and Orthotic Clinic has grown to what it is today. We’re excited to continue tending to Oakville’s and the surrounding areas’ foot care needs.
