Custom Orthotics: Why the Right Fit Matters

Published On: October 15, 2026

Your feet support you through thousands of steps every day. When your feet don’t function as efficiently as they could, it can affect more than just your feet. Discomfort can develop in the ankles, knees, hips or lower back, and activities you once enjoyed may become more difficult.

For some people, custom orthotics can help improve how the feet function and how pressure is distributed when standing and walking.

What Are Custom Orthotics?

Unlike generic insoles purchased off the shelf, custom orthotics are made based on your individual foot structure, biomechanics, symptoms and specific needs.

No single orthotic works for everyone. The right device depends on factors such as your foot shape, arch profile, walking pattern, footwear, and the reason you may benefit from orthotic therapy.

At Werkman, Boven & Associates, we assess your feet and lower limbs before determining whether orthotics are appropriate for you and which device would best suit your needs.

A More Precise Way to Capture Your Feet

We use a 3D scanning process to capture the shape of your feet. Our scanner uses TrueDepth technology on an iPhone to create a detailed digital representation of your foot.

This digital scan allows our orthotic laboratories to work from a precise representation of your feet when manufacturing your devices. Combined with our clinical assessment, this helps us design an orthotic that is tailored to you rather than relying on a generic shape.

Why Might Someone Need Orthotics?

Custom orthotics may be recommended to help address a variety of concerns, including:

  • Foot and arch pain
  • Plantar fasciitis and heel pain
  • Certain alignment or biomechanical concerns
  • Sports-related foot problems
  • Excessive or uneven pressure
  • Support following certain injuries
  • Specific needs related to footwear or daily activities

Orthotics are not simply about adding extra cushioning. Depending on the individual, they may be designed to support, redistribute pressure, improve comfort, or influence how the feet function during movement.

Thinking About Orthotics Before the End of the Year?

Another reason to plan ahead this fall.

Our orthotic laboratories have set year-end production deadlines for devices that must be dispensed before the end of the 2026 calendar year. The regular-price ordering deadline is December 10, 2026. Orders placed after that date and before December 14 can still be accommodated with an additional $55 rush fee. Devices ordered after December 14 will be dispensed in the new year.

Because orthotics require an assessment, scanning, ordering and laboratory production, we recommend allowing enough time for the process rather than waiting until December.

If you have been considering orthotics, experiencing ongoing foot discomfort or wondering whether custom support could benefit you, fall is a great time to have your feet assessed.

Book an orthotic assessment with our team at Werkman, Boven & Associates and find out whether custom orthotics are right for you.
