Sweaty & Foul-Smelling Feet

Published On: September 28, 2023

Most of us have suffered from sweaty feet and odour occasionally. Yet, for some people, sweaty feet and foul foot odour are persistent problems that can be embarrassing and uncomfortable. With 250,000 sweat glands, feet tend to sweat more than other parts of the body. With a daily hygiene routine, you can usually keep sweaty feet and malodour in check.

Our skin has many functions, and getting rid of excess heat from our body through sweat is one of them. Excess sweating, failure to leave the body, and accumulation of sweat is called hyperhidrosis. While sweat does not produce an odour, bacteria growth in the sweat does. Bacteria, fungi, mould, and yeast all thrive in moisture-rich, warm environments and cause the foul odour we all know, and in excess, it is called bromhidrosis.

While there are many possible causes of sweaty feet, the usual ones are:

  • Stress on the foot due to structural issues, strain or fatigue
  • Hot weather
  • Genetics
  • Hormonal changes

Sweaty feet can also have a harmful effect on other aspects, such as:

  • Causing shoe breakdown
  • Bacterial growth leading to fungal or other viral skin infections

If your feet, including between the toes, are not cleaned regularly and kept dry, sweat will accumulate, and foot odour and infections may follow. Follow this easy hygiene routine to combat sweaty and malodorous feet.

  1. Wash your feet daily with antibacterial soap.
  2. Use a washcloth to clean between your toes thoroughly. Allow the lather to remain on your feet for at least a minute before washing it off.
  3. Dry your feet thoroughly, especially between the toes.
  • Choose breathable footwear to reduce moisture buildup
  • Choose moisture-wicking socks
  • Use antimicrobial shoe sprays, such as Clean Sweep™, available to purchase at Werkman, Boven & Associates, to combat odour-causing bacteria and fungus in your shoes.

Don’t let foul and sweaty feet hold you back. With our chiropody guide and webpage with more information, you can regain confidence and bid farewell to discomfort. Embrace the freedom of fresh, healthy feet today!
